Let’s Talk about the Middle East, Feb. 21. 

Film showing (“The Insult”) and discussion led by Dr. Leena Dallasheh at The Minor Theater (1001 H Street, Arcata). Special screening with the lead actor, Kamel al-Basha! Thursday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. Cost $9.50. Twenty-five years after the Lebanese civil war, its wounds linger. In today’s Beirut, a small incident between a Palestinian refugee, Yasser (Kamel al-Basha), and a Lebanese-Christian, Tony, turns into a complicated trial, in which the personal becomes political. Competing narratives and mutual accusations of that war are laid out to show, as one lawyer states, “no one has a monopoly on suffering.” View the Facebook event here.

Scholarship for study abroad. 

The spring application cycle for awards from the Global Ambassadors Fund, which supports students studying abroad, is now open. Applications to support travel happening summer or fall 2019 are due March 12. See the attached cover sheet for further information and application instructions. 

Homeward Bound fall break. 

Are you trying to figure out how to get home and back to campus for Spring Break? Consider the Homeward Bound Bus Charter Program. Bus service will be offered on Saturday, March 16 to San Francisco and Los Angeles, with a return trip to Arcata on Saturday, March 23. Round trip fare per student is $115 to Los Angeles and $95 to San Francisco. Seats will be available for purchase March 1 at 9 a.m. Students are encouraged to reserve a space as soon as possible as seats are limited. For more information about the program, click here.

Historical Society part-time position. 

The Humboldt County Historical Society seeks to hire an editor for its quarterly magazine, the Humboldt Historian. The application deadline is March 6. History students with a May 2019 graduation date are encouraged to apply. See attached for the job description and application details.

25th Annual Social Justice Summit, Feb. 25-March 2. 

This year’s theme, ‘BREAK THAT WALL,’ seeks to provide tools for effective advocacy, finding yourself in this time of commodified bodies, and active ways to change the complicated world around us through the words we use.
