NEWS FOR HISTORY STUDENTS -- 9-27-19

  1. Free public lecture by former History minor, today. Josh Ferrell (Journalism major, History minor '05) will present "Food and Travel Journalism: Compelling Storytelling in Digestible Portions" today, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Library Fishbowl. He will talk about his adventures with food and travel journalism. Ferrell has traveled to 45 countries producing shows with Anthony Bourdain and now with Gordon Ramsay. See the attached flyer.
  2. Let's Talk about the Middle East, Oct. 3. Free film showing ("Capernaum") and discussion led by Dr. Leena Dallasheh at the Richard's Goat Miniplex (401 I Street, Arcata). Thursday, Oct. 3, 5:30 p.m. A 12-year-old boy living in Beirut runs away from his neglectful family, commits a violent crime, and is consequently sentenced to years in jail. He chooses to sues his parents for the tumultuous life that he has had to endure. His story is telling of the traumatic experience of many immigrants and refugees living in political turmoil in the Middle East. See the Facebook event here.
  3. Campus/Community Dialogue on Race. Call for proposals for this year’s CDOR, which will take place Nov. 4-8.  This year’s theme: Dismantling & Deconstructing to Build.” Students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to present a workshop or facilitate a discussion. Deadline to submit proposals is Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. See here for more details.
  4. Against the Wind Festival in Arcata. Two community partners, Jack Irvine and Peter Pennekamp, are organizing this festival focused on peace, nuclear proliferation, and climate change. They are interested in student, faculty and staff participation. If you would like to become involved, Jack's email address is pjirvine@suddenlink.com.   5. 2020 CSU Student Research Competition. Students are invited to submit a written summary of their research or creative presentations to the Office of Research by Jan. 31. If selected, students will compete at CSU East Bay, on April 24-25. The Office of Research will pay approved travel costs for up to 10 students selected to represent Humboldt. Cash awards will be provided to the outstanding presenter in each category.
