Undergraduate History Conference April 6-7

The Department of History invites you to its annual Undergraduate History Conference.

Keynote speaker Dr. David Coffey will discuss “Legacies of the Lost Cause: Confederate Symbols, Monuments, and Flags and What They Stand For” on Friday, April 6, from 5:30-7 p.m. in Founders Hall 118. Coffey will discuss the inflammatory nature of Confederate symbols and how and why certain symbols came to exist.

Coffey, who holds a Ph.D. from Texas Christian University, is professor of history and chair of the Department of History and Philosophy at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he offers classes in U.S., military, and Mexican history. His books include John Bell Hood and the Struggle for Atlanta; Soldier Princess: The Life and Legend of Agnes Salm-Salm in North America, 1861-1867; and Sheridan’s Lieutenants: Phil Sheridan, His Generals, and the Final Year of the Civil War. He is a co-author of Historic Abilene: An Illustrated History. Additionally, he has contributed chapters to well-regarded anthologies on Civil War, Mexican, and Texas history. He is currently at work on a new American military history textbook for Oxford University Press.

On Saturday, April 7, students enrolled in HIST 394 History Conference will present their research projects in Founders Hall 235 and 236 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A copy of the conference program will be circulated next week.
